Review: Silent World
by Karen Pecota

Charlie Dennis, USA 2021

Based on an original idea by friend Kevin Walker, filmmaker Charlie Dennis directs a short film called SILENT WORLD, that is inspired by the danger famous London rapper Signkid felt throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Why? Because Signkid is deaf.

The hearing world is attentive to environmental emergency warnings when alarms go off, but a deaf person, who is alone, is often unaware a crisis occurs that is automatic to a hearing person. What feelings arise when faced with danger where one can't communicate with anyone?

Dennis and Signkid portray a reenactment of what it is like when a deaf person is unaware of a threat in their environment because they don't understand that there is a warning; but to the hearing world it is apparent...who helps? Who warns? Who takes notice of those who cannot understand a dangerous surrounding simply due to not being able to hear? How does a hearing person know if another is not hearing? What happens due to a communication breakdown?

Signkid uses his music, and Dennis uses his moving picture, to address this experience. They make a case for emergency warnings to also have words, rhythm, vibrations, or beats to communicate signals of emergency to a deaf community.

A film of deep thought and one not to be missed because of its impact to put oneself in another person's shoes.
