38 AT THE GARDEN
by Karen Pecota

Frank Chi USA | 2022

NBA basketball player Jeremy Lin tells his story, in the first person; of how his hopes and dreams as an Asian-American to play professional basketball could have ended in a heartbeat if it weren't for a few gutsy and cutting-edge people, who believed he was the real deal---genuine talent made for the sport.

Jeremy's process to excel in the world of basketball suffered under extreme stereotypical prejudice as an Asian-American, though exceptionally talented. Jeremy shares story-after-story of how he was sidelined for advancements in the sport after winning the highest honors in championship circles and regular season games.

Lin's will and determination to show the world he was the right man for the job culminated in 2012. Lin is miraculously hired as an undrafted point guard for the New York Knicks. His hire is comical in-and-of-itself. And, unprecedented! Lin's teammates attest to the hilarity!

Lin's first game is show time! He must rise above his insecurities to face the Los Angeles Lakers at Madison Square Garden. Lin steps foot onto the court, and shocks everyone watching. Lin not only has a 38-point scoring game but outplays the famed NBA player, Kobe Bryant.

Lin, a Harvard graduate, drew the Asian community together world-wide beginning with this particular game and other outstanding performances, coined as Lin-sanity. A professional basketball career continued a good ten years playing with various teams--as a man of talent and of stellar character.

This thrilling short film, 38 AT THE GARDEN, under the direction of Frank Chi, and produced by Travon Free and Samir Hernandez, caught the eye of HBO distribution team. Upon a newly acquired acquisition, HBO will now add Jeremy Lin's story to their short film documentary series, to premiere in the fall of 2022. (KP)
