THE DOC
by Karen Pecota

Dave Caplan. USA, 2022

Filmmaker Dave Caplan makes his directorial debut as a love letter honoring the masterful Rap Artist, Tracy "the D.O.C." Curry in THE DOC, Caplan takes his audience on a fascinating journey as to why The Doc is so revered in the Rap and HipHop music world--his beginnings, his career and his mission.

In 1987, the D.O.C. prayed to God about his desire to be a unique Rap artist. The D.O.C. was well aware his musical talent was one-of-a-kind. He had impeccable timing set to his lyrical talent that had a flow of storytelling like no other artist on the scene. Well-known music artist, like Eminem would listen to him and comment, "How does he [The D.O.C.] do that, it's so hard?" His pack with God was that if He (God) allowed him to fulfill his dream, he'd tell everyone God gave it to him.

The D.O.C. buys a one-way ticket from Texas to Los Angeles confident that God will provide. Shocked by the cultural change, he categorized his new hood as a BERUIT atmosphere. Mama Curry (The D.O.C.'s mom) started praying. She said that the projects where they lived had no violence and her son was a good upstanding kid. She knew that Tracy was driven, and extra-ordinary. Her worry was that he could be setting himself up to fall. Setbacks are normal but she knew everyone would want a piece of his talent, fearing his personhood would be left out of the picture.

As a masterful artist, Caplan notes about the D.O.C., "He's likely your favorite rapper's favorite rapper." Caplan methodically explains how a life altering accident took the D.O.C.’s voice, after 18 months of popularity. To this day, his impact on Hip Hop culture is forever made in stone.

The DOC, the rapper, known for his incredible musical cadence and flow well before West Coast rap became popular struggles with his legacy and his desire to rap like before. Caplan says, "THE DOC is a film about redemption. It's a story about achieving your greatest dream only to have it ripped away, then to eventually find peace in an unexpected place." To this day, his voice lives on with a far reaching impact that's life altering. (KP)
