Review: Willie Nelson & Family (EPISODIC CATEGORY)
by Karen Pecota

USA | 2022 Directors: Thom Zimny & Oren Moverman

WILLIE NELSON & FAMILY was one of the films chosen in the Sundance Film Festival 2023 episodic films category. Award-winning filmmakers, Thom Zimny and Oren Moverrman, present, a one-of-a-kind, five-part documentary of the life and times of the famed Willie Nelson in WILLIE NELSON & FAMILY. Nelson has led a fascinating journey spanning seven decades thus far, and is described by Zimny and Moverman, "One of the greatest singer-songwriter-guitar players in the music world."

Nelson's story is told in his own voice, and while listening, I felt like he was sharing his journey just with me, as if I were the only one in the room. The timeline of his personal life and professional career begins in Abbott, Texas. It’s a place where he and his sister, Bobbie, were raised by their grandparents (Mama and Papa). Bobbie and Willie were taught gospel songs and musical instruments as kids, and at age six, Willie was given his first guitar. Those songs are etched in his brain, and he can sing a gospel tune, word for word, any time or anywhere. Nelson's storytelling reveals who he has become and those who mentored him along the way. Taking to heart his lifetime philosophy: "Don't be an asshole."

Nelson has a faithful following from all walks of life with varied political views, where each one finds themselves in the words of a song or two of his making. Nelson's transparency of his life on the road, the demons that haunt him and his ability to rise above tragedy has molded his character into a beloved man devoted to family, friends, colleagues, the concert goers, the record-buying public and his fans. Nelson calls everyone family that has some connection to him and for a good reason. They have walked with him through thick and thin and he is eternally grateful for their love and support.

Nelson is known to have earned "every conceivable award as a musician" and adds to his accomplishments that of an author, actor and activist. His music, philanthropy, marijuana advocacy, and activism, on behalf of the American farmer, keep him relevant and influential in an ever-changing world.

Though he is small in stature, Nelson is a gentle giant of a man. Zimny and Moverman share, "Willie sat with us for hours, never rushing, always generous and smiling, His honesty was shocking. No subject was off limits. It's so easy to adore this man." Adding, "We hope WILLIE NELSON & FAMILY connects not only Willie fans but also people who know nothing about the man and his story."
