Film Review: Priscilla
by Erin Huebscher

Sofia Coppola, USA, Italy 2023

Offering a captivating, empathetic, yet sober perspective on the iconic love story of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, PRISCILLA focuses on what really happened behind closed doors. Newcomer Cailee Spaeny captivates as she portrays Priscilla's transformation from the ages of 14 to 27. The film poignantly portrays how Elvis strips away her individuality, dictating her appearance, behavior, and even her reliance on medication. The film refuses to glamorize their relationship, instead inviting us along on Priscilla's emotional rollercoaster—from falling in love with Elvis to repeatedly feeling let down by him. Coppola aptly emphasizes the dysfunction in Elvis's world and Priscilla’s evolving integrity and courage.
