Film Review: MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE
by Karen Pecota

Shoshannah Stern, USA 2025

Reflecting on her life, in her primary language of American Sign Language, actress, Marlee Matlin collaborates with her industry colleague, Shoshannah Stern, to bring to life the complexities of what it means to be a trailblazer in MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE.

Matlin and Stern share the primary language of American Sign Language and have made great strides in the film industry from their acting and film directing talents; thus, Stern was the ideal director to showcase Matlin’s story. Matlin’s narrative is a timely narrative ready to be revealed to the world, due to a wonderfully supportive husband, and her mature adult children ready to understand more clearly a part of their mom’s back story; and, for Matlin with unflinching transparency to recon with her personal and professional struggles. It’s an exploration sharing the strengths and weaknesses that encompassed her rise to fame, the challenges with working in a hearing industry, while maneuvering high profile relationships, sobriety, and experiencing amazing career wins.

In 1987, Matlin became the first Deaf actor to win an Academy Award for her groundbreaking performance in CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD at twenty-one-years-old. This accolade thrust Matlin into the limelight creating a remarkable journey for a person who openly paved a new path for the Deaf community; she became an activist for inclusion and representation in an entertainment industry that initially did not want to give her “a seat at the table” or a place of notoriety, nor anyone like her.

Matlin continued to pursue her dreams. Her standout roles in projects like “The West Wing” and the Oscar-winning film CODA, have allowed others like her to follow suit to accomplish their dreams. Stern incorporates interviews with several individuals who have been influenced by her example in dedication and love for the trade and know her personally. Shoshannah showcases a beautiful portrayal of a genuine modern-day trailblazer in the film industry—Marlee Matlin.
