Vladimir de Fontenay, France, Norway, UK 2025
Based on a novella “Sukkwan Island” by David Vann that was included in his book “Legend of a Suicide,” is the basis of Vladimir de Fontenay’s film SUKKWAN ISLAND. Escapades on a remote Norwegian island, and a survival in nature’s own wilderness, is the combination that encompass a father-son’s journey to reconnect and share life in de Fontenay’s psychological thriller SUKKWAN ISLAND.
Roy (Woody Norman), at age thirteen, agrees to live with his estranged father, Tom (Swann Arlaud) for one year, off the grid, on a remote island in the Norwegian fjords where Tom owns a beautiful piece of land including a rustic family abode. Unfortunately, the residence needs serious repair.
Setting up a household was the first of many challenges Tom and Roy faced, but to live off the land. Tom hoped that Roy would come to learn that the experience could be enjoyable and rewarding. Roy, a city boy, had very little knowledge of how this could be possible. But he puts his best foot forward and learns. He longs to be connected to his friends and the outside world on social media but slowly grows to appreciate the lack of distractions, distractions that once occupied hours of his day. Over time, however, Tom understands that the lack of human contact plays a bigger role in Roy’s growing discontent with living just his dad in the wild.
This is a film to visually and intellectually invest oneself in the narrative to fully understand and grasp the surprise of an emotionally shocking conclusion of a story true to life.
