Roller Girl - Manchmal ist die schiefe Bahn der richtige Weg (Whip It)
U.S.A. 2009

Opening 1 Sep 2011

Directed by: Drew Barrymore
Writing credits: Shauna Cross
Principal actors: Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Marcia Gay Harden, Juliette Lewis

Drew Barrymore's directorial debut stars Ellen Page (Juno, Inception), supported by Marcia Gay Harden, Juliette Lewis and Kirsten Wiig. The story is based on a book with the same title written by Shauna Cross, who also wrote the screenplay.

Whip It! is a coming-of-age story about a young Texan, Bliss Cavendar (Page), trapped in small town Bodeen, who discovers a talent for roller derby in nearby Austin. A mix of rugby, roller skating and racing, the sport is the perfect platform for some classic laughs, in contrast to the solemnity of the Miss Blue Bonnet crown that Bliss's mother (Harden) is keen to have her daughter compete for. The movie has an array of lovable characters with names like Iron Maven (Lewis), Maggie Mayhem (Wiig), Smashly Simpson (Barrymore), and Razor (Andrew Wilson), yet is not afraid to add some insightful moments of drama in the middle of comic and punky, teen rebellion. Thumbs up for Miss Barrymore, who uses color and fun in a movie as cheerful as her smile! (Rosella Vaughn)
