Entertaining and thought-provoking, this Science Fiction horror movie explores the question how far we may be willing to go in the name of science and hope – hope to cure serious diseases.
In Splice a scientist couple performs a well-intentioned, though illegal, genetic experiment.
By splicing animal and human DNA, Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive (Adrien Brody) bring a completely new creature into the world. This first member of a new species is intelligent, emotional, and subject to conflicting instincts. The scientists don't know whether to treat it/her as another lab animal or their own child and end up doing a little bit of both – and more. No wonder they’re in for a couple of surprises.
Don’t expect a lot of blood or physical violence – the real horror in this movie is of a more subtle kind. While I was fascinated by the impressively animated new life form, Dren (Abigail Chu, Delphine Chanéac), I found the story not believable enough.
